Preventing Air Pollution
Students protest the use of chemicals which pollute the air they breathe.
The Indian government has finally begun to realize the problem at hand. Realizing how bad the quality of air there is, is the first step to making any improvements. Last year in 2012 the Indian government developed the five-year plan, which they hope to have implemented in all urban areas by 2017. The first part of the plan is to develop better technology in cars and trucks. Also it is to improve the efficiency and enforcement of regulation placed on vehicular emission. The second part of the plan is to encourage public transportation. The government aims to do this by making public transportation more available to the everyday person. To add on, they also plan to make it more expensive for people to drive, increasing gas and parking prices. By making driving more expensive, more people will turn to public transportation, leading to less traffic, and ultimately less pollution. The third part of the plan is to try to find alternative fuels for coal-fired plants to help reduce the harmful emissions coal gives off. The final step of the plan is to place stricter environmental standards, and to make sure they are correctly enforced.
Outside of the five-year plan, there are many other things happening to help prevent air pollution. People are being encouraged to change their methods of cooking. In urban areas, different sources of fuel are being recommended. In rural areas, it is encouraged that cooking is done outside the immediate living area. Another obvious was to prevent indoor pollution is through stepping outside when smoking cigarettes. Also, trying to limit them from your life style all together to help prevent outdoor pollution. Air pollution in India is a major issue, but over time, and with lots of money and dedication to the problem, it can get better.
